What the Radiologist Looks For
- TFCC (triangular fibrocartilage complex) tears
- Scapholunate ligament injury and instability
- Occult scaphoid fractures
- Avascular necrosis of the scaphoid or lunate
- Ganglion cysts
- Carpal tunnel contents and median nerve appearance
- Tendon tears and tenosynovitis
- Ulnar impaction syndrome
Who Orders This
Ordered after a fall on an outstretched hand with negative X-rays, for ulnar-sided wrist pain, or for clicking and instability.
How to Prepare
- No fasting or special preparation.
- Remove all rings, watches, and bracelets before you arrive.
- Remove any wrist splint for the scan.
- Tell us which wrist.
Common Questions
Often yes. Scaphoid fractures are often invisible on early X-rays, and missing one can lead to nonunion. MRI can usually detect them right away.
It depends on your build. Arm at the side is more comfortable; overhead gives better image quality. Your tech will choose based on what you can hold still for.
