We require a doctor's order before we can perform an MRI, and so do Medicare and most insurance plans. No order yet? We can help you get one — most patients arrange it in a day or two.
What the Radiologist Looks For
- Flexor and extensor tendon tears
- Collateral ligament injuries of the fingers and thumb
- Thumb UCL tears (skier's thumb)
- Soft tissue masses and giant cell tumors of the tendon sheath
- Inflammatory arthritis changes
- Occult fractures
- Infection and abscess

Ordered for finger injuries that did not heal, palpable masses, or inflammatory joint changes needing detail.
How to Prepare
- No fasting or special preparation.
- All rings off before you arrive — this is not negotiable and we cannot cut them off.
- Remove nail jewelry and any metallic nail products.
- Tell us which hand.
Common Questions
Fingers and the palm are a hand study. The joint at the base of the palm is a wrist study. Describe the location when booking.
Standard polish and gel are fine. Some decorative nail products contain metallic flakes, which can cause artifact — remove those if you have them on the hand being scanned.
