What a Shoulder MRI Is For
The shoulder is the body’s most mobile joint, which also makes it one of the most injured. A shoulder MRI is the primary study for rotator cuff problems — the four muscles and tendons that hold the joint together — as well as the labrum, the rim of cartilage that deepens the socket. It can show tendon tears, partial tears, muscle atrophy, bursitis, and joint surface damage that an X-ray and a physical exam can’t fully characterize.
Doctors order it most often for shoulder pain with overhead reaching, night pain that wakes you, weakness lifting the arm, or pain that started with a fall or a dislocation.
Where the Cost Difference Comes From
When you see a big number on a hospital bill for a shoulder MRI, most of it isn’t for the scan itself. It’s overhead. Hospitals typically layer on a facility fee for the room and equipment, a separate charge from the radiologist group for the read, and frequently a third bill from a billing service. Add anesthesia coverage that most routine MRIs never need, and the itemized total climbs fast.

The Honest Limits
We perform non-contrast studies only, and a shoulder MRI is a good example of why we’re upfront about that. An MR arthrogram — where contrast is injected directly into the joint — is sometimes preferred for subtle labral tears. We don’t do that, and we won’t pretend a standard scan replaces it. For most rotator cuff questions a standard MRI is diagnostic. But if your surgeon specifically requires an arthrogram, we’ll tell you honestly and point you to a facility that can do it, rather than scan you and hand you an incomplete study.
What the Visit Looks Like
For a shoulder MRI, you lie on your back with your arm at your side in a dedicated coil, padded and supported so you can hold the position comfortably. The scan takes about 25 minutes, and the whole visit runs about an hour including check-in. As with other joints, each shoulder is a separate study at $399 each.
