If you have never had an MRI before, it is natural to feel a bit nervous about what to expect. An MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is a non-invasive diagnostic test that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of your internal organs and structures.
Before the test, you will be asked to change into a hospital gown and remove any metal objects from your body, such as jewelry, watches, or even piercings. You will be asked to lie down on a narrow table, which will then be slid into the MRI machine.
During the test, you will hear loud, repetitive banging noises as the machine takes images of your body. You will be given earplugs or headphones to block out the noise. It is important to remain as still as possible during the test, as any movement can blur the images.
The test typically takes around 30-60 minutes, depending on what part of your body is being imaged. Some types of MRIs may require the use of a contrast dye, which is injected into a vein in your arm to help enhance the images.
After the test, you will be able to resume your normal activities right away. The images from the test will be reviewed by a radiologist, who will then provide a report to your referring physician.
